History of Development
With a strategic vision, the Communist Party and the Government of Vietnam have identified education and science–technology as top national priorities. In line with this orientation, on January 14, 1993, the Fourth Plenum of the Seventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam issued Resolution No. 04-NQ/HNTW on continuing the reform of education and training, which emphasized the task of “establishing several key national universities to serve as the core and driving force for the development of higher education in Vietnam.”
On April 4, 1994, Thai Nguyen University (TNU) was established under Government Decree No. 31/CP, through the reorganization and consolidation of four universities — Viet Bac Pedagogical University, Bac Thai Agricultural University No. 3, Thai Nguyen Industrial University, Bac Thai Medical University — and Viet Bac Electromechanical College, all located in Thai Nguyen City.
In 1996, the University of General Education was established as a member institution of Thai Nguyen University, with the mission of providing general education in a two-phase training program. The University operated from 1996 to 1998.
The establishment of Thai Nguyen University, together with two national universities and two regional universities, was a major policy of the Party aimed at developing large, multi-disciplinary, and multi-sectoral training centers, capable of meeting the demand for high-quality human resources to serve national industrialization and modernization, while enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnam’s education, science, and technology in the context of increasing international integration.
With the advantage of pooling resources from its member institutions, Thai Nguyen University has rapidly developed additional units. At present, Thai Nguyen University comprises 07 member universities (University of Technology, University of Education, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Economics and Business Administration, University of Sciences, and University of Information and Communication Technology), 01 College, School of Foreign Languages. International School, 02 branch campuses located in Lao Cai Province and Ha Giang Province, 14 supporting units for training and research activities; 05 research institutes, 01 Teaching Hospital under the University of Medicine and Pharmacy; and various affiliated research centers under its member universities.
Over the course of 30 years of steady effort and development in line with the Government’s orientations, Thai Nguyen University has continuously grown stronger in all aspects. By effectively utilizing the collective strengths of a regional university — mobilizing resources from its member institutions and affiliated units, leveraging favorable mechanisms and policies, and promoting a spirit of democracy, solidarity, dynamism, and creativity among its staff, lecturers, and students — Thai Nguyen University has made significant achievements.
TNU has continuously improved its performance in training high-quality human resources, conducting scientific research, and transferring technology to serve the socio-economic development of the Northern Midland and Mountainous Region and of the nation as a whole. The University has gradually affirmed its position and role within the national higher education system and in the cause of industrialization and modernization.
The Development Strategy of Thai Nguyen University for the period 2021–2025, with a vision to 2035, was adopted by the University Council under Resolution No. 51/NQ-HĐĐHTN dated December 21, 2021, and later adjusted and supplemented under Resolution No. 95/NQ-HĐĐHTN dated December 13, 2023, on “Adjusting the Development Strategy of Thai Nguyen University to 2030, with a Vision to 2045.”
Based on the review of achieved results, Thai Nguyen University has set its development orientation toward 2030, with a vision to 2045, as follows:
“To bring about a fundamental transformation in the quality of training, scientific research, and technology transfer in response to social needs and international integration; to move toward a green university model; to focus on developing several key disciplines that meet regional and international accreditation standards; to build and promote shared open educational resources across the university system; and to adopt advanced university governance models to realize the vision for 2045 — to position Thai Nguyen University among the top 500 universities in Asia.”
