Thai Nguyen University Defines Strategic Technology Research Priorities and Key Academic Training Programmes

On the morning of 28 July, Thai Nguyen University (TNU) held a conference to formulate its strategic technology research directions and identify key and talent development academic programmes. The event aimed to translate national policies on science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation into concrete institutional priorities for the coming years.

The conference was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Hoang Van Hung, Secretary of the TNU Party Committee and President of Thai Nguyen University. Participants included Dr. Nguyen Van Tao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of TNU, Dr. Nguyen Hong Lien, Vice President of TNU, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thanh Ha, Vice President of TNU and Chairman of the TNU Trade Union, representatives from the University Office, functional departments, member universities and colleges, affiliated schools, branch campuses, and institutes, together with leading researchers and experts in strategic technology fields.

At the conference, the Department of Science, Technology and International Affairs presented a comprehensive report on TNU's strategic technology research directions. As a major regional centre for higher education and research in Vietnam's Northern Midlands and Mountainous Region, TNU has established strengths in engineering and technology, information technology and artificial intelligence (AI), agriculture, medicine and pharmacy, education, economics, and natural sciences.

Key research priorities include natural resources and environmental technologies, electrical and electronic engineering, automation, agricultural technology, veterinary science and animal husbandry, and biotechnology. Looking ahead to 2035, TNU plans to develop regional data platforms, expand AI applications in education management and smart agriculture, advance research on indigenous crop varieties and livestock breeds, promote biotechnology in livestock production and plant protection, develop advanced materials from local resources, and enhance automation in mining and agricultural processing.

To realise this vision, TNU will focus on developing nine strategic technology fields, generating 20–30 science and technology products, and establishing six leading and talent-oriented academic disciplines.

The Department of Academic Affairs and Student Management also presented a proposal on key and talent development programmes for the 2026–2030 period. TNU aims to develop 5–10 flagship academic programmes meeting regional and international quality standards at the undergraduate level, establish 3–5 talent programmes, foster an international academic environment, and strengthen key laboratories in priority disciplines.

During the 2026–2030 period, the University will prioritise investment in selected flagship and talent programmes, strengthen its team of leading academics and researchers, and closely integrate education with strategic research directions. In the following phase (2030–2035), TNU aims to enhance the international standing of its academic programmes through recognised global rankings while expanding international collaboration in education and research.

In his concluding remarks, Assoc. Prof. Hoang Van Hung emphasised that this is a crucial task for the effective implementation of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on achieving breakthroughs in science and technology, innovation, and national digital transformation. He urged all affiliated units to focus on enhancing the research capacity among academic staff, design flexible curricula integrating digital technologies and artificial intelligence, and adopt learner-centred teaching approaches promoting self-directed and in-depth learning closely linked with research and practical experience; and developing a smart learning ecosystem that supports lifelong learning.

At the same time, he requested the training units to review, revise, or discontinue academic programs that no longer meet social needs, expand programs in disciplines with high workforce demand, study the establishment of innovation centers within the university-level, strengthen connections with the Regional Innovation Center; and promote the Triple Helix collaboration among universities, industry, and government. These efforts, he noted, would contribute to enhancing the quality of education, scientific research, and technology transfer at Thai Nguyen University in its new stage of development.
