Promoting Science and Technology – A Driving Force for Sustainable Development in the Northern Midland and Mountainous Region

In the context where science, technology, and innovation are increasingly becoming key drivers of socio-economic development, Thai Nguyen University (TNU) continues to affirm its role as a leading center for education, scientific research, and technology transfer in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region of Viet Nam. The academic year 2024–2025 marked numerous outstanding achievements in science and technology activities at TNU, contributing to improving training quality, promoting local socio-economic development, and gradually strengthening the academic standing of a multidisciplinary regional university.

Outstanding achievements in science and technology activities

During the academic year 2024–2025, Thai Nguyen University comprehensively and effectively implemented national policies and regulations on science and technology. The continued improvement of the management framework and the alignment of science and technology activities with the “Thai Nguyen University Strategic Development Plan for the 2021–2025 period, with a vision to 2030” have created favorable conditions for promoting research and innovation across the entire university.

Scientific research activities continued to achieve remarkable results. Across the university, 41 national-level science and technology projects are currently being implemented, with a total budget of nearly VND 58 billion. Additionally, 85 ministerial-level projects and 84 provincial-level science and technology tasks have been successfully implemented, closely aligned with the practical needs of various sectors and localities.

At the university level, 60 science and technology projects have been implemented, alongside more than 400 grassroots-level research projects by lecturers and nearly 700 student scientific research projects. These figures demonstrate the strong and widespread development of the research movement, which has become a crucial foundation for training and developing high-quality human resources.

As a major center for education and scientific research in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region, Thai Nguyen University places special emphasis on transferring scientific and technological advances to localities. During the academic year 2024–2025, the University signed and implemented more than 60 science and technology transfer contracts, with a total value exceeding VND 43 billion. Numerous models applying science and technology in agricultural production, land management, education, and digital transformation have delivered practical effectiveness, contributing to improving livelihoods and promoting sustainable socio-economic development in the region.

Scientific publications also continued to record positive outcomes. In the academic year 2024–2025, scientists of Thai Nguyen University published more than 2,100 scientific papers, including over 390 papers indexed in Web of Science (WoS) and more than 150 papers indexed in Scopus, thereby enhancing the academic reputation of the University and standing in a high position according to Vietnam’s higher education system.

Alongside this, intellectual property activities and the commercialization of research outcomes have been gradually strengthened. The University gained 31 patent applications and 27 utility solution applications, with several protection titles granted. These achievements provide an important foundation for developing science and technology products bearing the Thai Nguyen University brand with strong application and commercialization potential.

Notably, the establishment of five interdisciplinary research groups under a focused investment orientation reflects the University’s determination to build strong research teams capable of participating in and leading large-scale, interregional, and interdisciplinary science and technology programs.

Science and technology – A driving force for sustainable development

The achievements recorded in the academic year 2024–2025 further affirm that science and technology have become a vital driving force for the sustainable development of Thai Nguyen University, in particular, and the Northern Midland and Mountainous region, in general. In the context of implementing the Politburo’s Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation, Thai Nguyen University continues to identify science and technology as a strategic pillar for development.

According to Assoc. Prof. Hoang Van Hung, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Thai Nguyen University, Thai Nguyen University has established the Institute for Advanced Education and Research, and is honored to be one of 13 higher education institutions selected to develop a system of centers for excellence and talent in Industry 4.0 technologies by 2030. Specifically, Thai Nguyen University has been assigned to lead the regional network for agricultural biotechnology in Northern Viet Nam. The University has also set strategic goals to become a digital university and to rank among the top 500 universities in Asia according to the QS ranking.

Currently, Thai Nguyen University has unified its vision and approach in formulating and implementing its digital transformation strategy and is carrying out Phase 3 of the University-wide digital transformation project. The focus is on integrating digital technologies and artificial intelligence into higher education, to make digital transformation and AI applications core tasks, and prepare a digital workforce to operate and develop a digital society. In the coming period, the University will concentrate on developing the Science and Technology Development Strategy for 2025–2030; promoting applied research and technology transfer; developing large-scale science and technology programs to serve regional development; strengthening domestic and international cooperation; and gradually forming an innovation ecosystem closely linked with training and entrepreneurship.

With strong determination for renewal, a spirit of innovation, and a high sense of social responsibility, Thai Nguyen University continues to affirm its role as a leading science and technology hub in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region, contributing to the realization of rapid and sustainable development goals for the region and the country as a whole.
